LEGION

Today I had to leave my library club meeting early (well, all the important things and admin stuff were over and we were just preparing things for events over the next few weeks) and rush to the Toa Payoh MRT station to meet my sister at 5 because it was an emergency. (I got there at 4.30, she got there at about 5.10)

The emergency: She, her friend Andy and I were going to watch Legion. 8D

And lemme tell you, it was AWESOME. Alright, so it was more of an action/horror movie, which is usually not my thing, and they should have been able to use angelic powers or something instead of relying so much on the guns, but hey, it was cool. :P

For starters, we actually had the entire theatre to ourselves! It was amazing. We talked and laughed at a normal volume instead of hushed voices, rested our feet against the seats in front of us, bickered over the delicious popcorn, laughed our heads off and did not have to be distracted by things like other people talking at crucial plot points or babies crying. We just distracted each other. ;) Watching a movie with Andy and my sister means lots of extra commentary; near the end, one of Andy's jokes made me literally spit out a mouthful of Sprite, spraying it all over the seats in front of me. :X I sincerely hope they managed to clean it off. My sister loves making me laugh when I'm drinking at home because I cannot control my laughter. >.<

And Michael was kickass. I've been a Michael fangirl for ages, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] steadfast 's awesome version, but this version was different - rather like my version of Gabriel, [livejournal.com profile] cattygabriel , in fact - and still different and awesome. I loved the scene when Michael tells Jeep (though really, who names their son Jeep?! O.o) about how much he loves humans, how he was the first to bow to them back when He first created them (which reminded me of Lucifer refusing to bow before such inferior beings) and how he's watched them basically destroy themselves over the millennia, and yet there are some who cling to faith and hope. Even if it hadn't been like my own Gabriel, it was a really touching scene. ^_^

His utter calm in the face of practically everything also rather reminded me of the Michael from DC Comics' Lucifer, in fact. And the things coming after them... I thought they were demons, at first, but then Michael said they were angels. O_O That old lady, and the two kids... my sister says she's never hugging our grandma again. xD Thankfully ice-cream trucks aren't exactly common here. As Andy said, "If that's Heaven, I'd hate to see what Hell coming after them would be like."

I've always associated angels with flaming swords, but seeing Michael come out with two really cool guns and start blasting was A.W.E.S.O.M.E. And he kicked ass at hand to hand combat too, but the gun scenes were seriously amazing. I loved the bazooka bit as well.

Gabriel, however, made me facepalm - why does everyone make Gabriel out to be the villain? >.< First the Hellblazer comics and the movie version (Constantine), then the Lucifer comics, and now this. He's always portrayed as a self-righteous arse and a Snob with a capital S. I literally groaned when Michael, near the end, had a sword pressed to his throat and then spares him and Gabriel says something like, "Why did you show me mercy? I would have none for you," because, seriously, Gabriel IS the Angel of Mercy. I have done my research. :P But freaking hell, his wings and his fighting were COOL. My jaw dropped. And oh, Michael's seriously cool dagger. And his sword. *sigh*

For my eighteenth birthday, this July, I want Michael's dagger, his sword, and his wings. xD My sister can keep Paul Bettany himself, she was fangirling enough in the theatre.

It was fucking horrible.

There are a lot of things that could be improved, yes. I facepalmed quite a bit and some things disappointed me. (And the last bit made me go WTF because what prophets, and who the heck is that guy and what's with the tattoos? EXPLAIN THINGS, scriptwriters) But overall I really did find it entertaining. Though the commentary helped.

I do prefer your Michael ;) and Jen's, but as I said I did like this Michael's fight scenes. Strip away the fights and the effects, though, and you'd have a phenomenally horrible movie, I think. I did enjoy it, but in retrospect it's not one of those movies I'd pay to see again.

You can love it all you want, that's fine. Not everyone will like the same thing and that's a given. In my opinion it was a complete fucking mockery to God, to Michael and Gabriel, and to the filming industry. There was literally no research done save for wikipedia. I recall someone mentioning on Something Aweful that the dude who wrote the fucking thing admitted that he used wikipedia.

It shows. The plot is meaningless and Petty. Michael wouldn't need all those fucking guns and God's gripe with humanity wouldn't be so fucking pathetic.

I'm just a critique, anyway. Pretty little effects don't impress me. Quite why I was not overall impressed by The Boondocks Saints while everyone and their grandmothers obsess over it.

xD I don't love it but I did find it entertaining.

O.o The scriptwriter used Wikipedia? No bloody wonder. There were various points when I thought I found factual errors and I do think Heaven should have had some respect.
I have no idea what The Boondocks Saints is, I'm afraid. *goes to Google it*

I am somewhat impressed by good effects, but I also like it if there's a really good plot, hence why I don't love Legion though I did enjoy watching it.

You could always watch Gabriel, where Michael is the evil one and Gabriel is the one going around kicking ass xD

Seriously those two are like angelology canon OTP, why do people always pit them against each other? >_

If I may intercept, it is because people are stupid, don't research shit, and only know of those two Angels.

You may, because you are SO RIGHT.

Oh God, noooooo! xD Reading the synopsis on Wikipedia was bad enough. >.< Angels do not do pity sex! And that's only one of the many many things about that that annoyed me!

Because they're the two most powerful angels, I guess, and as Mikhail said, most people only know the names of those two a gels and so they're the first names that come to mind when trying to write something about inter-angel conflict. violent sex? ;)

The movie horrified Gabriel, by the way.

Michael masqueraded as SAMAEL. The one who tried to drag him from Heaven? Yeah. It horrified him too xD

Although he is noticing a trend of:
Michael and Gabriel: *fight to the death*
Michael: I can't kill you Gabriel <3
Gabriel: *STABKILL*
Michael: x.x

Should he be concerned? ;)

xDDD

... Gabriel is HORRIFIED. And I mean bloody horrified that Michael would think such a thing of him. >.< I occasionally poke at the tiny dark corner of my mind where there is a bit of an AU with a Fallen!cracked!Gabriel and that's the only way there'd even be a remote possibility of my Gabriel attacking Michael, let alone killing him. Well, that or Michael's deepest fear coming true, which Gabriel says will not happen. ;)

So no, Michael, if the migraine I get when Gabriel's in this sort of mood is any indication, you do not need to worry.

Although in that AIM AU RP we did with a pregnant female!Gabriel, if Michael keeps his jokes up she might discorporate him xD

And you know, Gabriel DID kill Michael, in the movie. O.O God brought him back. And it was after that they had the fight I mentioned in my post. xD

I haven't seen this yet, but I want to (if only for the wings)!  Perhaps this weekend. :D

Gabriel is also the villain in The Prophecy. :\  Though I'm not terribly fond of him constantly being cast in darker rolls, there is a bit of sense to it.  Though God's messenger and an angel of mercy, he is also an angel of vengeance and death.  He is often identified as the angel who laid waste Sodom and Gomorrah, who destroyed the hosts of Sennacherib, and was the angel who wrestled with Jacob at Peniel.  In Milton's Paradise Lost, it is Gabriel who is the head of the angelic guards watching over Paradise.  I have a book that briefly references a Babylonian legend (still trying to track that one down) that says Gabriel once fell into disgrace for not obeying a command as it was given and was thus temporarily exiled from Heaven.  Thus, while I prefer Gabriel to be an angel of mercy, I do not find it entirely out of line to cast him either as an angel of vengeance, or a spirit somewhat fallen from His Grace.

As for Michael showing mercy, many of his roles in canonical Jewish and Christian texts are far more merciful than those ascribed to Gabriel.  He is credited as being the author of Psalm 85 which beseeches God for salvation after Jacob royally screwed up and God sent Gabriel to kick his ass; the psalm also would remind people not to be so stupid as to turn their back on God in times of trouble (okay, so I'm taking some liberties with interpretations :P).  He is the angel who stopped Abraham from sacrificing his son.  According to Persian lore, Michael was called Beshter, and provided sustenance for mankind.  Though also identified as one of the many angels of death, he is given a more benevolent roll, weighing souls and delivering the faithful into eternal light.  Picking and choosing bits and pieces from the Bible and other sources, it is easy to justify casting Michael as the merciful guide and protector of mankind.

Er, right.  I talk WAY too much about this stuff.

xD When I first saw the trailer I was like ANGELS! WINGS! ARMAGEDDON! I'M WATCHING THIS! and my sister was like PAUL BETTANY! I'M WATCHING THIS!

Exactly! I've actally read or heard of most of those things about Gabriel ^_^ and so I do get that Gabriel is fully capable of vengeance and kickassery. (My Gabriel hasn't destroyed any cities yet, but I'm beginning to feel like I need to show that he *is* a warrior) But I think that being temporarily exiled once and then being accepted would be quite a hard lesson, so now Gabriel is either a rogue or very loyal to Him. But so many things take the first route. :\

I thought it was Metatron who stopped Abraham. O.o And I am IN AWE of your research. 8D Ooh, I didn't know that Persian stuff but it's really cool.

Nope, I think it's cool, you're awesome and I'd love to hear more. :D Where do you get your info from? Internet research seems to throw up the same stock info - bunch of info A and bunch of info B, that often contradict each other and get repetitive. And I can't seem to find any books on angelology here, whether in large bookstores or in those tiny second-hand corner bookshops.

As others have said, I think Michael and Gabriel get used so much in pop culture because they are the only two mentioned by name in Hebrew and Protestant scriptures and thus are the angels people are most familiar with. Michael is most often thought of as the general, associated with protective figures and patron saint of policemen and is therefore the obvious good guy, so Gabriel ends up being shoved in the role of antagonist. (If you do want to write something kickass with your Gabriel, I would love to read it, but don't feel obligated to write the RAAR SMITEY ANGEL stuff just because that is what fandom seems to do.  I rather like your Gabriel because he is less an angel of vengeance and more an angel of mercy.  And without giving away too much I will say Supernatural's Gabriel is a bit of a joker, so not EVERYONE portrays him as traitorous and vengeful.)

The thing with angels is that there's almost always at least half a dozen angels associated with any particular action wherein the angel was not outright identified by name.  Both Metatron and Michael are thought to be the angel who stopped Abraham.  The angel who destroyed the hosts of the Sennacherib has been identified as Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, Ramiel and so on.  The angel who wrestled with Jacob could be anyone from Phanuel or Gabriel to God himself.

The problem with the internet is that so many pages are copies of a paraphrasing of another copy with random bits of recent (and sometimes bizarre) new age theory or personal visits from "angels" thrown in and quoted as fact.  Even in the original source material (canon of the Old and New Testament, or apocrypha such as the Book of Enoch or the Book of Tobit) tends to contradict its self, so you have to do a lot of picking and choosing of what info you want to use.
As for books on angelology, I HIGHLY recommend Gustav Davidson's "A Dictionary of Angels".  Almost all of my information comes from there or it at least serves as a jumping point to find other articles and books (and I notice most of Wikipedia's articles on angels seem to be heavily based on the book's entries, though they don't always quote it outright).

Ahh, yeah. (I don't feel obligated xD but I do feel like showing that just because he doesn't seem to fight much doesn't mean he's not capable of doing so very well. Won't be anytime soon, though. And awesome! I can't wait to see SPN-Gabriel! :D)

Exactly. :S it makes research extremely annoying and I do pick and choose. I have been recommended that book by a couple of other people but simply cannot seem to find it. :S After I get birthday money I'll see if I can place an order at Borders or something.

(SPN Gabriel does not fit anyone's definition of an angel, but he does bring up some very interesting points about Heaven and his family. He doesn't show up until season 5, but there are some earlier episodes that are almost mandatory for his backstory.)

I would think Borders should be able to order it. I ordered mine from Amazon.com (I swear I buy EVERYTHING from Amazon - if they offered groceries, I would never leave my house).

Hmm. Maybe not aimed so much at people interested in… less conventional explosions? I'm not sure how to phrase that. Or something concretely supernatural didn't seem worth it, perhaps.

This one… I think he's sad, more than anything. Though that's not one of the parts that's been on my mind so much, lately (…and that would make location interesting, I suppose, I'm not sure which part of town would conduct that).

I think they wanted a movie with 'angels and guns' and then plotted the storyline around as much of that as possible. ;)

He did seem rather solemn. (Hmm?)

… Those two ideas are just not gelling for me. But fff, wouldn't surprise me. And I had vague hopes for it, too…

Yeah, that's about right. … Maybe I should muse him sometime when I've got this name thing sorted out. (It's kind of meant to be around here, but I'm not sure whether there're particular nodes of magic and/or emotion around the place aside from the North Shore cropping up with people up themselves every so often.)

It is entertaining. :D Not a fantastic movie in terms of plot, and I think I've done more angelology research than the scriptwriter did. >.< But very nice effects and definitely watchable. *thumbs up*

Nooo! Darn you. xP I shall do the same to you then! *evil laughter*

I... have puked all over my laptop once. :X I think it was the fifth or sixth time that morning, though, so by then most of the actual stuff had come out and this was mainly a lot of watery bile and a little bit of cereal. It was all over the laptop, table and floor, and my sister was asleep and nobody else was home, so despite the giddiness and tummyache I mopped everything up. :/ My netbook is still shiny and in fine working condition because it was the first thing I cleaned. :P

XD Poor netbook and poor you! I haven't thrown up in years....my friend and I were just talking about this today, in fact, lol. Somehow I think Nathan could survive that too though. (Nathan being my laptop, btw) He's survived me dropping him like...eight times so far. >.> I'm...kinda rough on him. XD But he's still alive and kicking, so it's all good.

I'll wait to rent the movie, instead of paying to go see it. xD I like pretty effects, and I don't know much about the whole angelology stuff (yet), but...I still like some kind of plotline. XD

Lucky you! And LOL, you named your laptop? xD He must be tough.

Oh, the plot isn't BAD in my opinion. I think it could be better because I've spent months playing angels in odd plots. xD And you don't need to know much about angels at all to see this movie. -_-

I did name my laptop! :D I couldn't resist, lol. I use it so much that it seemed like a good idea.

Yeah, I gathered that I wouldn't need to know much from the other comments on here...it sounds more like the movie would suck more if I DID know more about angels, lol. Kind of like reading a book and going to see the movie based on it. :/
