A person's maternal ancestry can be traced through their mitochondrial DNA, or mtDNA. Both men and women possesses the DNA, of course, but only women pass it on to their children. I read about it in The Seven Daughters of Eve (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Seven_Daughters_of_Eve) by Bryan Sykes; it's really interesting.
