I was helping my grandmother make muruku today and, when talking about something funny I'd done as a child, she said, "You had good brains and you knew how to use them when you were a kid." I teasingly responded, "When I was a kid? So I don't have good brains now?" and she replied, "Well, no, isn't that why you went to Australia to study? If you had good brains and done well you'd be studying here in Singapore."

I was speechless for a moment and then I said... )
So I don't know exactly where the future is going to take me, but I do hope that it will be away from Singapore. My family and closest friends are here and I will miss them, but we have the Internet and IM and Skype and Facebook and I can go back to visit them and load up on Singaporean food (one thing I do miss about Singapore; it has good food). I am so much happier in Australia, and I am thankful that I ended up there instead of going to NUS - it's a good uni and I have friends who enjoyed their time there, but I don't think I personally would have been as happy there as I am at UWA. If that means I'm being judged by gossiping old biddies in Singapore, fine, so be it. The joke's on them, because unlike them, I get to actually do what I love instead of something stolid and respectable and boring. I get to live my dreams instead of sacrificing them for the sake of money. I'm happy and growing as an actual human being, instead of being a GDP statistic. I had the brains to recognise what I wanted and how to get it, so if that's stupid by Singaporean standards: screw you, Singapore.

(Note: I do still love and respect my grandmother. The 'gossiping old biddies' was in reference to her friends whom she seems to think are apparently judging me?)

Repost from my Tumblr, with minor edits/additions.

So I was bored last night and felt like watching something and then I impulsively decided to marathon the whole of North & South, which I’d heard about and seen gifs and stills from but had never actually watched.

Oh my god. Richard Armitage. Richard Armitage as John Thornton, in my favourite type of historical men’s clothing, with those high collars and cravats and puffy white shirts and waistcoats and pocket watches and long black coats and top hats that he pulls off perfectly and hnngh. (I have a huge weakness for men in Victorian clothing, okay. :P) They kept doing these long profile shots highighting his imposing posture as he walks among the workers or stands and stares and broods, and they zoom in on his face in profile and his eyes and nose and just. That man’s face is so gorgeous. And he’s so stern and angsty and broody for most of it that on the rare occasion when he does give a small smile - though he smiles a lot at the end - my god, his smile is a bloody deadly weapon that does things to my insides. Especially those smiles at the end.

And oh my god, that rough, brokenhearted, “Look back. Look back at me.” I tried to hug the screen. Poor baby.

^ this gif was contributed by the lovely vnfan in response to my Tumblr post (thank you, dear!) and it gave me ALL THE FEELS all over again.

Warner Bros. announced that J.K. Rowling will make her screenwriting debut with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Yep. There is an actual movie coming out that's set in our beloved wizarding world, with Rowling herself writing the script!

Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway. - Rowling

*screams* *flails*

And I'd just been looking at my scanned copy of an interview with myself in the Singapore newspaper on the eve of the release of Deathly Hallows Part 2, where I talked about the buzz and shared excitement and anticipation that brought HP fans across the world together before the release of a new book or movie, and how I'd miss it. But now we've got a new movie to look forward to! I can't wait to dress up and go see it with friends and family. ♥

Also, Tumblr has pretty much exploded with the sheer force of the Harry Potter fandom's delight. :D

A friend (who happens to be named James Potter-Brown XD) and I were watching Sorceror's Stone the other day. It's lost none of its magic. Oh Harry. ♥

It's the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts. RIP Remus, Tonks, Severus, Colin, Fred, and everyone else who died at that battle - and before it: Dumbledore, Mad-Eye, Dobby, Sirius, Cedric, James, Lily, Ted, Hedwig, everyone. ;___; ♥

I'm listening to the heartbreaking Deathly Hallows Part 2 soundtrack now with shivers running down my spine and a lump in my throat. ALL THE FEELS.

It's the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and given my love for Gabriel I can't let this day go by unmarked. So here's my yearly Annunciation picspam. :D

I particularly love the portrayal of Mary in the last one.

Quickly posting this at 11.55pm on Christmas Day (or rather Night), since I only got home a while ago from my gran's.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, everyone! (Or if you prefer, Happy Non-Denominational Commercialised Gift-Giving Winter Holiday!)

sivaroobini: (THE GREAT CELESTIAL CHEERLEADER)

Okay, so back when I returned from Pencampwr at the beginning of June I meant to put up photos of my awesome medieval weekend and I never did. And then I had exams and flew home and there was a lot of crazy cleaning and organisation because my sister was getting engaged and when Indians get married or even engaged it is crazy. And I had a 12-hour Special Extended Edition movie marathon of The Lord of the Rings with friends. And I had to attend a wedding in Malaysia on my birthday and rather disliked it, but felt much better the next day when back in Singapore and cutting cake and eating durian with my family. And then WE WENT TO THE HARRY POTTER EXHIBITION AND IT WAS AMAZING AND I SPENT SO MUCH BUT IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT. And I went out with friends and was given more cake and had to pack in a huge hurry and now I'm back in Perth.

And basically I meant to put up photos of all of these things but everytime I switched on the laptop I was always distracted because ever since I saw the Avengers movie all those months ago my mind has been EATEN by Avengers fanfic, especially Steve/Tony. I've read hundreds of Steve/Tony and Avengers fanfics obsessively and have pretty much exhausted Archive Of Our Own and am trawling LJ and Tumblr for more. <_< And now I'm tentatively poking my head out again and peeking at all my other fandoms that I neglected and catching up on my f-list.

Hence the long absence, for which I apologise. Though it also had to do with the fact that half the time I was also exhausted from cleaning or spending all day out with my family/friends and had no energy to do much besides flop into bed and read smut.

I will be spamming you with overdue photo posts, fair warning, but first: my grades for the first semester were released on July 16th.

Ignore the three UPs, they were for compulsory online modules on academic conduct, Aboriginal culture and basic communication/research skills and I actually got more than 80 marks in each, but you just need to pass them and so they're listed as Ungraded Passes. But oh my god, the others.

I got Distinctions in Discoveries in Archaeology, German Studies 1 and Introduction to Scientific Practices (Science Communications), and a High Distinction in Myths of the Greeks and Romans. It was past 2am when I first saw this and it took me a few moments of squinting blearily at the screen to realise what I was looking at, and then I wanted to jump off the bed and go and tell everyone, but everyone was asleep. D:

I would have hated myself if I'd gotten anything less than a Distinction in Greek mythology, but hadn't been expecting a HD. And I honestly have no idea where the Distinction in Science Comm came from, since I did slack a bit in that class and got Bs for most of my assignments and hadn't thought my performance in the final assignment was spectacular. o_O

And now that the initial glow has worn off I'm panicking over whether I can maintain this sort of grade as everything gets harder. D: Semester 2 starts next Monday and I'm really looking forward to it - I'm continuing German and also taking Latin 1, a unit called Glory and Grandeur that's classical Greek and Roman history, and an English unit called Journeys: Texts Across Place and Time (which is for my Medieval and Early Modern Studies major; I'm double-majoring in that and Classics and Ancient History). I can't wait to start all these courses - god, I've wanted to learn Latin since I was a child - but am also worried.

Also, I landed in Perth after midnight on the 21st but still haven't really unpacked. <_< ... I should get on that. BUT FANFICTION.

I'm also considering signing up for this:

I haven't written much this year and haven't posted anything (role-play aside) and have zero ideas for a GO Big Bang, but hopefully that will change soon.

sivaroobini: (Marauders)

It's May 2nd. Aka the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts on May 2nd, 1998.

I cried for everyone who died at the Battle (I know it's a work of fiction. Shut up.), and I think that the movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, did a good job with that. Also, if you don't have the soundtrack you should. Statues and Courtyard Apocalypse are among my favourites because they're so heartbreaking and suit their scenes so perfectly. ;__; Listening to them now and trying not to tear up. I've even had dreams about the Battle with Courtyard Apocalypse playing in the background. >_>

Dammit, now I want to watch the movie again. I COULD, in theory, but I was planning to do some research for a project. Damn.

Picspam time, and perhaps I will watch it this weekend.

"Piertotum Locomotor! Hogwarts is threatened! Man the boundaries! Protect us! I've always wanted to use that spell!"

I laughed through tears at this point in the movie. This scene gets a video link.

*holds her wand up* RIP Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks, Colin Creevey, Fred Weasley, Severus Snape, and everyone else who fought and died at the Battle of Hogwarts. And RIP, everyone who died before that: Lily and James Potter, Sirius Black, Hedwig, Albus Dumbledore, Dobby, Ted Tonks, Mad-Eye Moody, Cedric Diggory...

Until the very end. Always.

It's Michaelmas! The feast of St. Michael the Archangel, and also of the Archangels Gabriel and Raphael. :D (Poor Uriel, always being left out just because he's not canonical.) So it's also called the Feast of the Archangels. I usually focus on Michael for this though.

Sancte Michael Archangele,
defende nos in proelio;
contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium.
Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur:
tuque, Princeps militiae Caelestis,
satanam aliosque spiritus malignos,
qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo,
divina virtute in infernum detrude.
Amen.

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle;
be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray:
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits
who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Field Commander of the Army of God, One of the Chief Princes, Advocate of Israel, One Who is Like God, Angel of the Presence, Chief of the Virtues and Archangels, Angel of Truth, Defender of Christians, Patron Saint of Chivalry, Patron Saint of Warriors, Captain of the Host of the Lord, Prince of Light, Viceroy of Heaven, Prince of Israel, First of the Seven Who Stand Before the Lord, Archistratege of God, Prince of
Primordial Fire, the Expeller, Supreme Commander of the Heavenly Host, Prince of the Seraphim, the Right Hand of the Lord, Conqueror of Satan, Saint Michael Mikha'el the Archangel. ♥

Definitely Harry Potter! My kids will be as familiar with The Tales of Beedle The Bard as with Cinderella and Snow White. :D And Hogwarts will be another home for them, as it was for me. They'll also watch the movies over and over with me. <3

I'd also read or recommend to them the Narnia books, and The Hobbit (and we shall watch the Lord of the Rings movies together too; I'll let them read LotR when they think they're old enough). I have loved these books since my own childhood and they're definitely classics for children. I also loved Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Great Expectations and Oliver Twist from the age of seven or eight, and I'd start them off on abridged versions and then let them read the unabridged ones when they want to. Also, I grew up reading loads of Enid Blyton. I think the Famous Five series was my favourite; I had the entire set. My kids will grow up on those too, and The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers and Dog, Malory Towers, St. Clare's, and her Rewards short story collections.

And, of course, mythology. I grew up reading loads of Norse, Greek and Egyptian myths, as well as Hindu myths. Obviously, as a child I only had access to the censored versions; therefore I believed that the part of Osiris's body that Isis could not find was his leg, only finding out years later that it was his, ahem, phallus. XD

Some gorgeous Potter-related graphics that sum up my feelings perfectly:

^ There are a couple of typos, but I still think it's gorgeous.

^ I thought that was the most beautiful scene in the Half-Blood Prince movie: when all the students and teachers of Hogwarts, standing by Dumbledore's body, raise their wands together, and the light from all their wands dispels the Dark Mark in the sky.

And that is the sort of thing I want my children, nieces, nephews and godchildren to read. Books that teach them to believe in magic and the impossible. Books that teach them the importance of friendship and family and bravery and loyalty and faith and love and forgiveness and ideals, that provide strength and show them that you can use your brains to get yourself out of sticky situations (I <3 Odysseus, even if he is a bit of a dickhead at times). Stuff that instils in them a sense of awe and love for the ancient civilisations. Stories that develop a love for adventure and nature.

One of the reasons I am so fond of Potter is all the references Rowling makes to creatures and legends from all over the world; it led me on a merry treasure hunt to find all these things, like manticores and divination methods and alchemy and etymological roots and so on, and I learned so much. (It's also one of the reasons I <3 The Dresden Files - the way Jim Butcher makes use of so much fantasy lore - but it's hardly for children.) The series isn't perfect, of course, but if you asked me what I would read to my children, it's the first thing that comes to mind.

It may be way past midnight but it's still the 25th in most of the world. :P

It is the Annunciation! Being a Gabriel RPer, I cannot let this day go by without at least mentioning it. XD

This is just so adorable I HAD to share it. <3 Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] eidolon_bird , for linking it to me!

sivaroobini: (Crowley inner turmoil)

I think that pretty much sums it up, really. I have so many things to write - about half of them are actually half-written, and one file has decided to go MISSING and I still haven't found it - and I just can't. I stare blankly at those Word documents, occasionally crank out a few words, then delete them. Even role-play is tougher than usual right now and it's usually easy. And I don't even know why.

On a couple of occasions last year, I was feeling very mentally burnt out by school and all the stress of exams and stuff, had trouble writing, and on the second occasion I actually considered taking a break from RP because I was so tired all the time. I had trouble writing then too. But right now I'm done with schooling until uni starts, so it's odd. Yes, I sometimes sleep at 5 or 6AM, but then I wake up around 1 or 2pm...

However, the remedy for both the previous occasions proved to be sleeping in. Since tomorrow (or today, rather; it's 3.30AM) is Sunday and we're visiting my gran as usual, I guess I'll spend most of Monday sleeping. Hopefully that works! Otherwise, I might have to resort to this:

My archangel may be very fond of cats, but I don't quite trust a cat to write him. ;)

sivaroobini: (Armageddon)

So I've decided that whenever possible from now on I'm uploading a picture, with some relevance to whatever I think I'm going to talk about, before the actual wall of text post. I have so many cute or funny pictures and I might as well share them. ;)

I just want to bury myself like that fox and hibernate right now. @_@ There's this strange sort of lethargy or sluggishness in my bones.

Last night I was trying to catalogue some of my books at my LibraryThing account and now I just want to curl up with snacks and a hot drink and reread most of them, starting with Neil Gaiman's Odd and the Frost Giants. It may be just a really thin kids' book, but the storyline is awwww-worthy and the characters and the use of Norse myths are amazing and if I had kids I would so read it to them. That also goes for Sheila Banfield's Leif the Lucky. According to LibraryThing, only one other person on that website besides me owns it. Which is sad because for a simple-looking thin little kids' book, it combines an engaging plot and historical characters with lovely details of Viking history and art and culture and everday life, and shows how Christianity is just beginning to make itself felt alongside the old worship of Odin and Thor and so on. These books, to me, are amazing children's books, and I don't get how stuff like Captain Underpants is more popular. Sigh.

cut for ramblings about crystals, religion and cleaning )

Help wanted! Help me clean my room and move stuff, and I will cook for you and give you something from Dubai or Egypt. Even if it's just sand from Giza or Saqqara in a tiny bottle. :D

sivaroobini: (Ineffable)
It's the Gondorian New Year, as I mentioned. The 25th of March also happens to be the Annunciation, the day when the archangel Gabriel informed Mary that she would be the Theotokos (God-bearer), and hence it's celebrated as the Feast of the Annunciation.

Being the Gabriel fangirl and roleplayer that I am, I can't ignore this! I marked it at Gabriel's LJ too, here.

A Google search of images of the Annunciation threw up...
Picspam! )

Behold!

Jan. 5th, 2010 03:06 pm
sivaroobini: (Tartan is stylish)

So I haven't touched Photoshop since 2005 (We learnt the basics in school, and I promptly forgot them when the course was over), except for the occasional minor touching up of photos in it (red-eye reduction, erasing pimples etc xD). Then when I got my paid roleplay account for Gabriel I started making more icons. I wanted more of Gabriel with his wings out and I didn't want to keep asking [livejournal.com profile] eidolon_bird to do everything for me because I'd feel bad, so I thought I'd have a stab at it.

I went searching for wing pictures and then opened Photoshop and poked about. Editing the background for Gabriel's layer away was a right pain because the lighting made his hair and clothes blend in, so using the Magic Wand tool or the other one would make his arm or his hair and half his face disappear. Then I noticed the Magnetic Lasso tool (is that the right name?) and voila. Some time with that, the magic wand and the paintbrush fixed things.

His wings here are smaller than what I envision them to be - I used bird wings and not angel wings, after all. Couldn't find good ones. This was practice. But I can't deny I'm pretty pleased at how it turned out. :D

(The model I use as Gabriel is a Brazilian male model named Santiago Figueras.)
sivaroobini: (Booty Cat)

So I found this gorgeous artwork of Gabriel the other day.

And since I'm always on the lookout for more icons for my dear role-play character, the Archangel Gabriel, I was very excited - this might possibly be the best painting of him I've ever seen, that actually somewhat fits my mental requirements. Okay, so in my head Gabriel's hair is black while here it's merely brown. It's still pretty damn close. xP I love the wings. Although I must say that those excessively loose, weirdly draped robes are not flattering at all.

I cropped this out to make an icon by adding some text, but it was still so lovely on its own:

So I then proceeded to make myself an icon by adding text - only I couldn't decide what to add. Originally I was going to put God's Left Hand but then I remembered what Gabriel's name means and thought it would be cooler. I was aiming to get the word God in a bigger font than the other words but Paint wouldn't let me do that and I was lazy. xP

Then I made this one, which I preferred and am using as one of my icons for [livejournal.com profile] cattygabriel:

I love it. ^_^

And then in the past half an hour, I decided to go mad and made four more, all from the same picture. 8D

More Gabriel icons! )

Okay, okay, so those extra four were probably overkill. What can I say, I like the picture. xD

Also, could one of you help me out? I have this gorgeous picture of Santiago Figueras, the model I'm using as my Gabriel PB, half-tuned away, which would be perfect for me to edit in wings, so he's exposing them -  something significant, considering my characterisation for him.

The problem is, I suck at photo manips.

<--- I want to edit his wings in so it looks like he's shirtless and is offering his wings to be groomed.

This is something like what what I imagine his wings to look like:

But obviously that won't do for the picture, so heck I'd be content with editing this in even though it's a bit too cutesy. :( I could make it look like it's only the top of his wing, since I picture them as huge.

If anyone reading this has some tips, I will love you forever! <3
