sivaroobini: (Hobbit-approved!)
This may not be the first Tolkien fic I've actually written - I've been poking on and off at a Belladonna-centric fic for a while now - but it's certainly the first one that I'm actually posting. :D

It started life as my NaNoWriMo 2016 project, and is now being heavily edited (with the help of the lovely Ulan, my beta-reader) and posted over at Archive of Our Own. I'm incredibly nervous about it but also excited; it's a very ambitious project and I've had to do a fair bit of Tolkien research for it.

Basically I've been on a Glorfindel/Erestor kick for a couple of years now. Everything about that pairing (and the different ways they're written) mashes my buttons. :D Unfortunately it's also a bit of a niche pairing within the Tolkien fandom, unlike behemoths such as Bilbo/Thorin (which I do ship) or Legolas/Aragorn (which I do not; I ship Aragorn/Arwen and Legolas/Gimli, kthx :P but I do hear it's a huge ship). After exhausting all the E/G fics at AO3, I desperately combed LiveJournal and the various forums and archives from the heyday of the LotR fandom after the movies came out, like Of Elves and Men and the Library of Moria and even that pit of despair, FFN. And in desperation for more Glorfindel/Erestor fic, I began writing my own and indulging all my headcanons.

Tolkien's work really is a bit of a sausagefest, and so I'm appeasing my inner feminist by including various original female characters to pad out the supporting cast, in addition to the usual Imladris cast like Elrond and his family, Lindir, and Melpomaen. I hope they're badass. Two of them are high-ranking officers in the Imladris military, because Tolkien once said that while there's no difference in ability between Elven males and females, it's a question of natural temperament that leads them to their roles within society for which they are better suited, and I say that's absolute bullshit. :P There's also a trans female minor character, because why not? I may have her and the butch lesbian Elf get together. A number of fics do manage queer/POC/female representation and even disabled representation, but trans characters are apparently really rare in Middle-Earth?

So here it is, though I'm not too pleased with the title (never my strong suit). Four chapters are already up, with a lot more to come.

Welcome to Imladris by SavioBriion. Canon events as seen from Imladris, from its founding until the end of the Third Age. Focuses on Erestor and Glorfindel, and a supporting cast.

:D

While looking through my folders, I found this. I have a very vague memory of staying up late one night two years ago, half-asleep but wanting to write something about Susan, but I don't actually remember writing this. Still, a quick Google search didn't reveal this story as already existing, so I'm going to assume I did write it and forgot about it. XD It's about Susan's reactions to finding the chess piece by the well at the beginning of Prince Caspian.

Chess Piece (because I fail at titles)

Disclaimer: Narnia belongs to CS Lewis, and all dialogue between the Pevensies is lifted from Prince Caspian.

Notes:
There's a minor bit of internalised sexism at one point, when Susan thinks that as a queen she was selfish for not giving birth to an heir. That does not reflect my views in any way.

I was playing around with this Mary-Sue generator and the results were hilarious. Basically, you input things like the names of your Mary-Sue, her love interest, another male, colours, numbers, various place names and races, weapons, female body parts, types of clothing etc, and then it generates this astounding piece of literature. THE END

sivaroobini: (that damn enormous fiery eye again)

Since sometime last year, I've been very into the Hobbit fandom. I mean, I've always loved Tolkien, and when I first read LotR in early 2005 (I read The Hobbit back in 2003) I read a lot of fanfics, but I hadn't read any Tolkien fics in years. I watched the Hobbit movies and loved them but didn't really get into the fandom. That changed last year when someone sent me a link to a Thorin/Bilbo fanfic and I fell in love with the pairing. Since then I've been avidly reading lots of fanfic on AO3 and the Kink Meme and following some fans on Tumblr and generally going crazy (and denying the deaths in the canon ending - LALALA EVERYONE LIVES HAPPILY EVER AFTER).

In general, I love it. The quality of fanfic in this fandom, or at least for this pairing, tends to be pretty high overall, and there have been some fabulous AUs and continuations out there. There are also masterpieces like the Coats & Customs series, which basically fixes everything that ever vaguely bugged me about Tolkien and epic fantasy in general - not enough female characters, no queer characters, no characters of colour, unsatisfactory resolution for the orcs, the Elves fading - and this series, and these two fics broke my damn heart. There are also a lot of fantastic and very creative AUs with impressive worldbuilding. Basically I could rec fics until the cows come home, or you could just check out my Bookmarks page if you're interested.

However, there are a couple of things I've noticed in fics that I just have to rant about. (These are mostly due to the fact that I am a history nerd and overthink details like trade and farming resources and the history of fashion in Middle-Earth and I feel the need to ramble about them, and not actually criticisms.)

Why hobbits do not eat chocolate and wear one-piece dresses... )

That said, despite my rants, I generally read and enjoy the fic anyway, and most Hobbit fanfic is fantastic. <3 And the fandom is lovely. I love how everyone is in collective denial of the ending and writes fics about the Durins surviving the Battle of Five Armies and persuading Bilbo to stay in Erebor, and after the last movie comes out this year and reduces me to a sobbing mess in the cinema, I will definitely be in need of fix-it fic. XD

SPN fic rec

sivaroobini: (Armageddon)

I don't normally read Supernatural fanfic unless it's a crossover with Good Omens or something, especially since the last episode I watched was Episode 6 of Season 6. I keep meaning to catch up eventually, though I haven't heard very good things about it. I'm not even in the habit of reccing fics, most of the time (though I've been planning a Harry/Draco reclist since last year).

But [info]shinobi_mi_chan has written an absolutely AMAZING oneshot about Jo Harvelle, and I don't think it contains many spoilers aside from a hint at how Jo's father died. It's called Rivulets, and can be found here.

sivaroobini: (Crowley inner turmoil)

For the Good Omens Exchange 2011, I wrote a long Good Omens/Harry Potter crossover AU fic which the mods titled Slytherin Vaguely Downwards as I could not think of a title. It grew into an utter monster and I went way over the deadline, and at one point I think I even had a nightmare in which the mods were so angry they banned me. XD

God, the story was hard. Crowley was not easy to write for; I'd sit and stare blankly at the Word document for ages, cranking out maybe two words an hour, and then at 3AM when I was about to go to bed I'd suddenly find the words flowing out and type furiously for another few pages until I passed out. I researched the weirdest things, racking up a Google search history of 'food allergies', 'coconut allergies', 'English-Latin online translator', 'old-fashioned cuckoo clock', 'kola nut properties', 'sarsaparilla properties', 'guido reni st michael painting', 'magic marker' and so on, and discovered the lovely resource that is the Harry Potter Wiki along the way, where I looked for Ashwinders and Herbology textbooks and pureblood history and all sorts of other things; when I was writing a battle scene I drew on the spells in my memory at first, since I can recall quite a lot, but eventually had a tab with the Wiki's list of offensive spells open while writing. I also spent ages on Pottermore one afternoon studying and contemplating wand woods and cores, and went around with my nose buried in my copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them for a week. At one point I jumped up and ran to find my copy of Quidditch Through The Ages to doublecheck what sort of wood the handle of a vintage Silver Arrow broom would be made of.

The longest chapters/short stories I've ever written thus far have been maybe 9 pages in a Word document; this one was 28, if I recall correctly, and went up to 29 after I added some end notes. I went, "Hallelujah!" out loud when I finished it, though I did enjoy writing it. Mostly. Slipping in references to the Discworld series and other random references like William McGonagall was definitely fun, as were the footnotes.

[livejournal.com profile] steadfast and [livejournal.com profile] sunflower_mynah are my awesome beta-reading team who also provided lots of encouragement - the Dr Filius quip and footnote were entirely Jen's idea - and [livejournal.com profile] eidolon_bird and [livejournal.com profile] kleine_teekanne were also there to hold my hand and listen and cheer me on when I moaned about how big it was growing and how difficult Crowley was being. [livejournal.com profile] _silverfox and [livejournal.com profile] seablue_eyes were also encouraging. Thank you so much, all of you. ♥

There are actually a few scenes I had in my head that I had no time to write/didn't quite fit into the story arc. However, I may write and post them as Extras/Deleted Scenes if I can.

And it turned out that [livejournal.com profile] sidesinger, my recipient, was actually assigned my request as well! She wrote me an absolutely FABULOUS Good Omens/Harry Potter crossover called Hogwarts According To Adam and I LOVE IT SO MUCH. Hers had lots of awesome Discworld references too - clearly we both love the Librarian - and even had references to the Shoebox Project! She even had photos of actual handwritten notes from Crowley to Aziraphale that made me squee out loud. *flail* And there were tons of moments that made me laugh out loud, and it was amazing. And we basically exchanged GO/HP crossover fics, which is just awesome. 8D

Yes, yes, so the previous chapter was posted in DECEMBER 2009. I had exams and this chapter was hard! :P I've been poking at it on and off since then.

(Disclaimers: The Silver City is my take on the one introduced by Gaiman in his Sandman series and short story Murder Mysteries. Gabriel, whom I claimed for this [livejournal.com profile] fanfic100 challenge, is mentioned by name in Good Omens, where it’s implied that he is Aziraphale’s supervisor, but other than that I am taking free rein with the appearances and personalities of him and the other archangels. Aziraphael and Gadre’el are my take on what Aziraphale and Crowley were like in Heaven before the Fall; they are the property of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

Thanks to my dear beta Jen/[livejournal.com profile] steadfast for helping with ideas, editing and the idea for the Michael-Gabriel dynamic. (Michael is inspired by Jen’s version and she has no objection to my borrowing him.)

Additional Note: Uriel is Presider over Thunder and Terror while Gabriel is Prince of Ice and Thunder; here, I explore my idea of the story behind this.

Chapter 2: Prompt 021 – Friends.

Gabriel laughed at the feeling of the wind ruffling his feathers, looping in the air and luxuriating in the pure joy of flight, of the feel of wind against hair and skin and feathers... )

I've been on a cleaning/organisational frenzy at home since my job contract ended, and clearly it's extending to LJ. I thought I should try to collect all my fics (the ones I'll admit to, anyway) together in one place. I suck at ratings, so if you think something should be rated differently, please comment saying so. :)

Bear in mind that the earliest stories are most likely not all that good; I started writing fanfic in 2005 and I was only 12 going on 13 then. And that there is a fair amount of slash (male/male pairings: the pairings are stated clearly, so if it offends you, please don't read), and some of the role-play entries may be friends-locked (however, if you add my RP accounts as friends to read them, I will add you back ASAP).

The lovely [livejournal.com profile] jolantru  has recently published a book, Wolf at the Door, and last night I attended her book launch party at a nice little place called The Garden Slug. Other members of the Speculative Fiction Writers of Singapore were there too, and a lovely time was had.

Sadly, I didn't have the presence of mind to snap pictures of the food before we attacked it (June did take pictures though, and when/if I see those, I'll post them here if she gives me permission). Everything looked good, and the vegetarian pizza I shared with Mint Kang and a couple of other people was delicious. But the best thing was the dessert. *__*

Sadly, this is just what was left when Mint and I stopped long enough for rational thought and realised a picture would have been a good idea; before that, we were in a happy dessert-induced daze. This dessert platter was ambrosial.

The brown chocolate thing on a popsicle stick was a brownie popsicle, coated in fudge and deliciousness. The remnants of brown powder and cream next to it were all that was left of the tiramisu. That lump of white ice cream scored by our forks is actually vanilla gelato. And the stem attached to a tiny piece of brown flesh, with another piece of flesh nearby, is all that was left of the amazing stewed pear. According to the menu, it was stewed in white wine and cinnamon. It arrived still warm and soft and cinnamon-scented and it was SO GOOD. Especially when you ate a piece together with a forkful of gelato; you had a heavenly explosion of sweetness in your mouth. The grapes and strawberries were sweet enough, I guess, but after several mouthfuls of stewed pear and gelato, the berries seemed too sour. XD

Joyce held a mini quiz and I won signed cover art and a bag of chocolate. :D I passed the chocolate around and, sadly, forgot to get it back before leaving. XD Unfortunately I'd had to leave early, it was already nearing 9.30 by then and I'd told my family I'd leave by 9 plus, so I had to miss Joyce's reading.

Today I went for a job interview at Kinokuniya! The interviewers were nice, but I'm scared I might have been too nervous and talked extra-fast. There were probably too many 'Um's too. And I wasn't expecting the mathematical questions at the end - silly of me in retrospect since I was applying for the positon of cashier, but I didn't think I'd need to convert Japanese yen to SGD! I haven't done Maths since the end of my O Levels in 2008; I'd better brush up on my mental arithmetic. I really hope I get this job; I'd love to be able to work in a bookstore. Kinokuniya is an amazing bookstore with a fantastic selection and I'd be surrounded by books and aiding the cause of getting people to read more and... *____*

In other news, I'm poking at my [livejournal.com profile] fanfic100  challenge again; I edited some of Chapter 2 but I'm still stuck at the end, as I was over a year ago. I'm going to beg [livejournal.com profile] steadfast  for help. XD I'm also considering joining the 2011 [livejournal.com profile] rs_games  writing challenge; I haven't written Harry Potter fanfiction in aaages (this was my last piece, I believe) even if I lurk and read quite a bit, so I should probably write a few drabbles as practice or something before tackling the challenge itself.

Meanwhile, it's time for my annual re-read of [livejournal.com profile] irisbleufic 's Crown of Stars series. *goes to read*
sivaroobini: (Crowley inner turmoil)

Aargh. My A Levels were finished at the end of last November and I have a break until university starts much later this year. I'd been looking forward to this period SO MUCH last year, and planning what I'd do kept me going.

Now the months stretch ahead of me and I have so many things to do but just can't bring myself to finish them. Would the word ennui be appropriate? There are times when I just walk around the house, unable to motivate myself to finish any of my current projects or start a new one. None of them seem to appeal to me; sometimes they do but I don't feel like doing them anyway. When I'm on the computer, instead of writing or doing anything productive, I spend hours faffing about on Facebook or reading (in some cases, rereading) fanfiction.

Maybe a list will help. Things that are in progress will be italicised, things I've completed will be struck off.

This story is poignant and beautiful and funny and makes me sad, with the thought of what might have been. ;_;

It's called Scenes from Another Life and shows Harry meeting Ron on the Hogwarts Express and arriving at Hogwarts, interspersed with memories of Sirius's reaction to finding James and Lily's bodies, proving his innocence to the Ministry, winning custody of Harry from Petunia, and how both Sirius and Remus brought Harry up. I highly recommend it.
sivaroobini: (Angel)

This was meant to be posted for my birthday; it was meant to be a tiny drabble looking at my RP character Belial, [livejournal.com profile] lordofsin , when he was still an angel. It grew and grew and I only finished it in August. I posted it as his LJ here, but somehow never got around to posting it here at my own LJ as I had originally meant to.

A/N: A huge thank-you to [livejournal.com profile] steadfast  and [livejournal.com profile] sunflower_mynah  for betaing!

I apologise for the italics; it was originally meant to be a very short piece with brief flashbacks and then grew into this. And when I tried switching the formatting, it insisted on being in italics. Untitled for now, but suggestions welcome!

PG13 perhaps, for religious/mature themes. I'm horrible at ratings.

Disclaimer: Carasel and Saraquael are the property of Neil Gaiman in his Murder Mysteries, as is the concept of the Hall of Being and the Silver City, and Gadre'el is my take on Crowley from Neil Gaiman's and Terry Pratchett's Good Omens. Aziraphale makes a tiny cameo too. Otherwise, all angels mentioned are my own takes on Biblical characters.

  *

It would have been inaccurate to say that Belial had never meant to Fall; he had. He just hadn’t known what it was like, at the time; what it would feel like, what it entailed. What he would Fall from.  )

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] steadfast , I am currently in mourning.

Most of you out there in the Good Omens fandom most likely know of her fabulous fanfiction, and the ongoing Paradise Thwarted. In the latest chapter - SPOILER ALERT - a certain awesome someone dies.

I sort of knew this would happen, but I still spent most of the last part of that chapter crying. I was reeling at first, and then as the others mourned, so did I.

Michael is awesome, no matter how much I make fun of him; he's Saint Michael the Archangel, Badass of God the one who smote Lucifer from Heaven and can singlehandedly defeat a demon army. Viceroy of Heaven, God's Right Hand, Prince of the Seraphim, Leader of the Heavenly Host, Archistratege of God, Expeller of Satan, Advocate of Israel, Archangel of Warriors,  blah blah blah. Yes, I knew all of those by heart and can list more.

And Jen's Michael was adorable. Somehow, she managed to write a character who could loudly proclaim his awesomeness and simply elicit fondly exasperated sighs from us, rather than scorn for his ego. Michael was just too genuine and boyishly enthusiastic to be considered arrogant, or be scorned for his ego. And I roleplayed with him a lot, too, and couldn't help but love him. He's just so adorable. (Talking of roleplay, the archangel living in my head is... there is no nice way to put 'screaming and crying')

I literally cried out and grabbed my netbook screen when Azrael turned up, and read on in shock for a while. And then the tears came. :'S

AWESOMENESS WILL NEVER DIE.

Simon Baker is the PB for Michael in roleplay, and he's who I picture when I read about Jen's Michael.

^ I'm rather fond of this stained glass art of Michael too, though he's not blond in it.

Yes, I'm privileged enough to know what happens in the end. Somehow, I was still crying. Kudos to you, Jen!

*clings to Michael*

sivaroobini: (Ineffable)

Disclaimer: The characterisations of Michael, Raphael and Uriel belong to [livejournal.com profile] steadfast , as seen in her fabulous fic Manchester Lost (and the sequel Paradise Thwarted). Zizi is her take on Aziraphale, creation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. Gabriel is my own character ( I roleplay him as [livejournal.com profile] cattygabriel ; it just happened that he insults Michael almost like the way Jen's does. One can't help it, with Michael being the way he is xD), and Lucifer is mostly mine, but with a little bit of input from Jen.

Wow. It's been months, more than a year, since I wrote any Harry Potter fanfiction. O.o The last HP thing I wrote was Starry Night, in late 2008.

This fic has no title because I really could not think of one, so reviews, concrit and suggestions would be much appreciated.

Disclaimer: Aziraphale, Crowley and the bookshop are the property of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, in the fabulous Good Omens. Remus Lupin and all other recognizable Harry Potter characters belong to JK Rowling.

A/N: I realize Aziraphale might seem a little OOC towards the end, so here’s my explanation; I feel that angels and demons, or at least Aziraphale and Crowley, can sense if you’re about to die. In that sort of situation, there’s surely no harm in Aziraphale revealing what he is, to give a moment of peace and faith to the person (and I also think that people close to death can sense that sort of thing anyway). Also, for some reason, in my head!canon the Lupins are lapsed Catholics.

So I got my [livejournal.com profile] go_exchange gift, HERE, and it is AMAZING!!! My Secret Santa gave me a crossover fic with Issue 50 (if I recall correctly) of DC Comics: Lucifer! And it is so beautiful! After I find out who it was, they'll get a fic from me to say thank you.

And the other Secret Santa who gave me six months of paid time for my [livejournal.com profile] cattygabriel  account turned out to be Uriel-mun, aka [livejournal.com profile] divine_tempest , who is absolutely wonderful and wins my undying devotion!

Also, I know I promised a GO/HP crossover fic a few days ago, for Christmas, but my beta Jen and I are still editing it; we found some unforeseen inconsistencies. :( Sorry, June, but it looks like you'll be getting a New Year's gift instead of a Christmas gift from me. I'm beginning to wonder if I accidentally smoked something while writing it. :\

Oh, and tonight, the night of December 31st, there will be a blue moon! A blue moon actually occurs when there are two full moons in one month. The second full moon is the blue moon, and if I recall correctly it only happens once every 19 years. So everyone, go check out this phenomenon and ring in the New Year with champagne under a blue moon! *toasts everyone with her glass of nonalcoholic sparkling apple cider*
